Battery backup systems
Electricity or power is a basic necessity these days for the operation of industries, business organizations and even for domestic purposes. All electrical appliances that have become a necessity in households and organizations run on power. Most of the power supply for domestic as well as commercial purposes is obtained from utility houses or grid systems. However, there are times when the power supply from utility system fails or there is insufficient power generation in the grid system. At these times it is important that all the necessary machinery is operational so that the work of organizations or at homes does not stop. With the increase in power needs across the world, there is a shortage of power and power cuts have become common. It is therefore necessary that during power failures enough electricity is available.
Battery backup systems are the ones that continue supplying power to all types of organizations when the utility system fails. These systems are more like emergency power systems that supply power as soon as the power supply from the grid system is cut off. These systems provide what is called uninterrupted power supply. The battery backup systems store power in the form of mechanical energy in their storage units. When the power supply from the utility grid is cut off, these backup systems start working by converting the mechanical energy into electrical energy. The necessary equipments can be attached to these systems so that they can continue working whenever there is a power cut.
Battery backup systems have replaced generators for providing backup power for domestic as well as commercial uses. The main problem with generators is that they do not offer uninterrupted power supply. This is because it takes a few minutes for the generator to switch on and supply power. Generators also require a lot of space whereas the battery systems are small units that occupy very less space. Another problem with generators is that since they run on fuel, they cause pollution. On the other hand, the battery systems do not pose any kind of environmental problems.
There are several technologies that can be used in battery backup systems. One of the most commonly used technologies is the offline or standby technology in which the battery system performs the very basic function of supplying power when there is a power cut. There are other technologies as well which may be provided with extra features like controlling voltage, providing high current etc. However, the basic purpose of all remains the same i.e. to store power in storage battery units and supply it whenever necessary.
The cost of the battery backup systems is a major consideration when they have to be installed. These systems are available at different prices depending on their size and the functions that they offer. For domestic purposes, one can get installed a battery system that meets a few needs. These systems are not very expensive. On the other hand, for commercial purposes where power needs are more, very expensive battery systems need to be installed.
